Observation of the Heavy Baryons Sigma b and Sigma b*.

We report an observation of new bottom baryons produced in pp collisions at the Tevatron. Using 1.1 fb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II detector, we observe four Lambda b 0 pi+/- resonances in the fully reconstructed decay mode Lambda b 0-->Lambda c + pi-, where Lambda c+-->pK* pi+. We interpret these states as the Sigma b(*)+/- baryons and measure the following masses: m Sigma b+=5807.8 -2....

On breaking the age-metallicity degeneracy in early-type galaxies: infall versus star formation efficiency

The correlation between [Mg/Fe] and galaxy mass found in elliptical galaxies sets a strong constraint on the duration of star formation. Furthermore, the colour-magnitude relation restricts the range of ages and metallicities of the stellar populations. We combine these two constraints with a model of star formation and chemical enrichment including infall and outflow of gas to find that the tr...

On breaking the age-metallicity degeneracy in early-type galaxies: Outflows versus Star Formation Efficiency

A simple model of chemical enrichment in cluster early-type galaxies is presented where the main parameters driving the formation of the stellar component are reduced to four: infall timescale (τf ), formation epoch (zF ), star formation efficiency (Ceff) and fraction of gas ejected in outflows (Bout). We find that only variations in Bout or Ceff can account for the colour-magnitude relation, s...

Generalized sigma-derivation on Banach algebras

Let $mathcal{A}$ be a Banach algebra and $mathcal{M}$ be a Banach $mathcal{A}$-bimodule. We say that a linear mapping $delta:mathcal{A} rightarrow mathcal{M}$ is a generalized $sigma$-derivation whenever there exists a $sigma$-derivation $d:mathcal{A} rightarrow mathcal{M}$ such that $delta(ab) = delta(a)sigma(b) + sigma(a)d(b)$, for all $a,b in mathcal{A}$. Giving some facts concerning general...
